(LINTON) - The possibility of establishing a farmers market in Linton’s Humphreys Park is back on the agenda of Linton’s City Council and Park Board.
Anna Rochelle, of the Greene County Daily World reports, in the past, a handful of vendors have been obtaining permits from the city to sell fresh produce in season on a corner in the park, but the park board has been thinking about doing away with the permits.
Instead of issuing permits for vendors, the park board might host a farmers market on weekends in the park.
No decision has been made but the issue did come up for some discussion during the city council's regular monthly meeting and there is a possibility that weekday permits will continue to be issued in addition to the weekend market.
The park board has been talking to organizers of farmers markets in other communities and they've been planning. They've been working on a contract they propose to use - the agreement between the city and vendors who participate in the farmers market.
The proposed contract was presented, but no action was taken.
Mayor John Wilkes said he would like for City Attorney John Rowe to look it over before making a decision.
Councilman Tony Richards said he'd like to continue to issue permits for sales during the week.
Councilman Jathan Wright said he'd been conducting his own informal survey and people were receptive to the idea of a farmers market but they were not in favor of getting rid of the weekday permits.
If a farmers market is established, the park board's proposal is that vendors could sell products made in Greene County as well as products grown or produced by the vendor.
The council tabled the matter to give the attorney time to review the proposed contract and for the park board to continue its discussions.
Linton's Park Board meets on the third Thursday of the month in City Hall. The meetings are open to the public.
The issues of weekday permits and a farmers market will be discussed during the park board's next meeting and interested people are welcome to attend -- at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21.
