Dugger Man Arrested After Stealing Checks

Last updated on Friday, February 1, 2013

(BLOOMFIELD) - 29-year-old Ryan Gene Duckworth, of Dugger, was arrested last week and charged with two counts of forgery, and two counts of receiving stolen property.

Officer Thomas Jerrels of the Linton Police Department began an investigation on Jan. 13 when he was contacted by a Sullivan County deputy who says a Dugger resident had reported three checks stolen from his checkbook.

The victim did not notice the checks were gone until he received notice of overdraft charges from his bank. Two of the checks were written to Linton WalMart in the amounts of $214.24, on Dec. 11, and $262.96, on Dec. 13.

According to the probable cause affidavit security footage from WalMart video surveillance had been reviewed and clearly showed Duckworth handing the checks to cashiers in the two separate transactions, then signing them with an electronic signature.

The checks belonged to Duckworth's father, who told Deputy Sneed he did not want to press charges against his son for these incidents. A case against Duckworth was filed in Greene Circuit Court on Jan. 22 and a warrant for his arrest was issued Jan. 23.

When Officer Jerrels and two other Linton officers went to serve the warrant at a residence in Dugger, they says they could see Duckworth in the window of the home, but he refused to come to the door. Officers called for assistance and then entry was made into the residence. At that point, Duckworth gave himself up and was taken into custody.
