This afternoon Anderson will join the participating middle school contestants Lawrence county, to compete for the title of 39th Annual WBIW Spelling Bee Champion.

The champion will represent our community at the regional spelling bee in Louisville, Ky. in March.

1340 AM WBIW invites friends, family and other members of the community to come out today to support our local youth.

These kids have worked hard to continue their education and need your support at this event. The event is free and the contest begins promptly at 4:30pm.

The event will be over at the conclusion of the trophy ceremony once a winner is determined.

If you can't make it to the live event, tune in after 6pm for the re-broadcast tonight.

Elementary Champion Christan Anderson, was "really, really nervous" when the competition started.

"After a few words it got easier, but I was still nervous," Anderson says.

Anderson took the title by spelling the word curriculum.

"I knew the beginning of it, but I got confused on the end and just took a guess at it," Anderson says. "And I got it."

Anderson says she studied by using the dictionary on her tablet. She thinks because she loves to read also helped.

"I have read all of the Twilight books and the Hunger Games," Anderson added.

Runner-up Amber Voigtschild, who will turn 10-years-old on Saturday says she studied a lot for the competition.

"We were given a little blue book from the Louisville competition that had all the words in it," she says. "I put red stars by the hard words and I would say them and then spell them over and over again."

Kathy Voigtschild, Amber's mother also helped her daughter practice.

"When the judges would say a word I would imagine it being typed on a computer screen, see it and then spell it," Voigtschild says.

The event is sponsored by 1340 WBIW, Geo Flo, Bedford Federal Savings Bank, Stokes & Housel CPA, Vista Spa, Ringer & Daniels, Stonebridge, Judy Macy State Farm, Bedford Ford, Indiana Steel, J.A. Benefits and Lawrence County Farm Supply.
