(SEYMOUR) - Seymour Community Schools evacuated students from Seymour Middle School after a bomb threat was reported to the school police officer Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 6.
Students evacuated to a nearby building as a precaution while police and school officials searched the building, according to assistant police chief Craig Hayes.
Hayes said a piece of paper alleged there was a bomb in the school.
A Seymour Middle School student has been arrested in connection with the threat at the school.
Assistant Police Chief Craig Hayes says a 13-year-old was arrested at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday by Officer Billy Smith on a charge of intimidation.
The student was taken to the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center in Brownstown and remained in custody there Thursday morning, Hayes said.
According to Seymour Superintendent Robert Hooker the note found in a school restroom triggered an evacuation of the school's 700 students around 1 p.m.
The note was found by another student and turned over to authorities.
"Apparently (the arrested student) admitted to writing the note," Hayes says. "It was a school prank that went wrong."
Hayes says the investigation is continuing.
