(BEDFORD) - The Bedford North Lawrence High School Stars won't just battle the New Albany High School Bulldogs on the basketball court Friday, Feb. 15.
They will be battling heart disease and stroke by turning the stands into a blaze of red with their first annual RED OUT during the 6 p.m. game.
Everyone is encouraged to participate by wearing "Rock the Beat" T-shirts, which are available for a $10 donation to the American Heart Association. Shirts will be available at the high school throughout the week leading up to the game and at the game.
Bedford North Lawrence's basketball RED OUT, a community outreach program, is sponsored by the Student Athletic Leadership Team (SALT). The athletes are raising awareness about heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in Lawrence County. Students will be raising donations throughout the week with activities to get the message out on a heart healthy lifestyle.
One hundred percent of money raised by the Red Out will support the American Heart Association's mission of building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke in Lawrence County. Cardiovascular disease is responsible for 37.7 percent of deaths in Lawrence County. Nationwide, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of Americans, responsible for one in three deaths. And congenital heart defects are one of the leading causes of death in children under age 1.
The American Heart Association provides community education programs and funds heart research, including more than $2.2 million at universities in Indiana.
