(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Police arrested 59-year-old Gary Lester Coonce, Friday night after he accidentally stabbed his friend in the back with a sword.

Coonce, of Bloomington was charged with criminal recklessness.

According to police logs, Bloomington police were called to a home in the 2500 block of South Madison Street around 10:30 p.m because of a disturbance.

Sgt. John Kovach says, when police arrived Coonce answered the door, and officers found a man lying face-down on the floor bleeding from his back in Coonce's living room. Police also found a two-foot-long sword, covered with blood, by the door.

Kovach says Coonce told police he had been joking with his friend and he acciidentally stabbed the 45-year-old man in the back.

The man told police they had all been drinking and he was going to leave because he didn't want to be around other drug activity. The man told Coonce he was leaving and that is when Coonce allegedly stabbed him in the back.

But another witness told police, Coonce told the man to leave and when he wouldn't that is when Coonce pulled the sword from behind an entertainment center. The witness told police they saw Coonce swing the sword, but didn't actually witness the stabbing.

The injured man was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for treatment. Kovach did not have an update on the man's condition Saturday.
