Bloomfield Football Booster Club Host Battle Of The Bands

Last updated on Sunday, February 17, 2013

(BLOOMFIELD) -The Bloomfield Football Booster Club continues to launch fundraising projects in hopes of soon fielding a school-sponsored team.

Nick Schneider, of the Greene County Daily World reports, a "Battle of the Bands" concert is set for Shawnee Theater in Bloomfield on Feb. 23.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and music starts at 7 p.m.

Event chairperson Alison Bachman has five bands lined up to date that will put on the show, which is anticipated to last about four hours.

The winning group will receive a three-song demo from event sponsor, Rewind Studios in Bloomington.

"The winner will be selected by audience vote, so fans should come out and support their favorite group," Bachman said. "The groups will be performing a wide range of music and there should be something that appeals to almost everyone.

The groups scheduled to perform include:

* The TV Repairmen (Bloomfield)
Members: Grayson Gerni, Cody Bair, Brent Seymour (all of Bloomfield)
Genre: Rock

* AsWeAre, also known as AWA, (Evansville)
Genre: Rock, Indie, Pop

Members: Dale Vaughn - Vocals/Guitars, Julian Fleck - Drums, Cameron Gregory - Bass/Backing Vocals, and Kenny Miller - Lead Guitars

* A World Apart (Martinsville)
Genre: Hard rock, metal

* Along the Lines (Hartford, Ky.)
Genre: Metal (Altcore)

* Romanticide (Greenfield)
Genre: Hard rock, metal

AsWeAre (AWA), a solo project of Dale Vaughn founded in October 2010 in St Louis, Mo., is probably the best-known band on the entertainment bill.

AWA's debut EP (extended play) "AsWeAre EP" was released in January 2011 and launched the single "A Humbling Experience". The single was picked up by radio and Internet radio across the U.S. and around the world gaining AWA international exposure, according to Bachman.

In the summer of 2012, Vaughn moved to Evansville and AWA recorded its second project "The Change EP".

The band recorded with well-known producer Kevin Gates.

Starr says the fundraising efforts of the Bloomfield Football Booster Club are encouraging.

Since Nov. 27, 2012 ---- the date that he presented a proposal to the Bloomfield School District Board of Trustees to sponsor a school football program ---- just over $4,400 has been raised.

"We have a fundraising goal of $1,500 per month ($18,000 annually), but are averaging over $1,750 per month so far. Depending on how the Battle of the Bands goes, we could reach $5,500 by the end of the month," Starr said.

Also on Feb. 23, Booster Club members will be pumping gas for donations at Huck's in Bloomfield, starting at 10 a.m. They'll also have tickets available for the "Battle of Bands" that night.

A Bloomfield school team playing a varsity schedule would not take the field until the fall of 2016 under the proposal, which by Indiana High School Athletic Association guidelines has to include three years of junior varsity play.

Starr estimates the first-year cost of a junior varsity program to be about $25,000, dropping to $13,500 the second year and less than $11,700 the third year. The junior high program would cost about $11,000 to start with the cost decreasing to $9,000 the second year and $8,600 the third year.

Until a revenue stream is created, the Booster Club has agreed to fund half of the annual operating costs while the school would fund the remaining half, Starr told the school board in November.

Starr, a retired U.S. Navy First Lieutenant, who co-directs the school's award-winning NJROTC program, said initially, ninth through 12th graders would play a JV schedule for the first three years. During the same period, seventh and eighth graders would engage in a junior high schedule.

All games, until a home field could be constructed, would be played on the road or by using rented facilities at area schools, including Linton-Stockton, North Daviess and Eastern Greene, according to Starr.

Starr anticipates that the school board will act on his proposal at either the February or March meeting.

Last week, a meeting was conducted at the high school for prospective players and 34 signed up, Starr said.

Starr said he's pleased with those early numbers.

"We can't complain very much about the fundraising and the interest. But everyone wants it to happen faster," Starr said. "A lot of people are making it happen."
