Last updated on Friday, February 8, 2013

(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Planning and Zoning Department issued fewer permits in 2012 than it did in 2011.

According to Plan Director Dan Kirk, the numbers were down across the board from new commercial and residential building to remodeling project. But Kirk says there was an increase of activity at GM, with the construction of a new 65, 362 foot building with a value of $18 million that began in 2011 and was completed in 2012.

Another big renovation project was the $3.5 million improvements at Stalker School. According to the report, the department issued 605 permits covering $30.1 million in value during 2011. In 2012, the number of permits dipped to 397, with a value of $14.6 million.

The permits cover the range of building activity, from new construction to remodeling to demolition. There also are permits for signs, outbuildings and other items.
