(BLOOMINGTON) - 53-year-old Michael Webb, of Bedford, is facing three misdemeanor charges in connection with grabbing and dragging a man with his car during a protest and march to raise awareness about Bloomington’s homeless population.
The Monroe County Prosecutor's Office filed charges against Webb on Friday. The charges include criminal recklessness with the use of a vehicle battery and disorderly conduct.
The incident happened after a group of protesters, members of Bloomington's homeless population and Shalom Center clients, stopped the flow of traffic on Walnut Street, south of the intersection and crosswalk at First Street, in front of the Shalom Center just before 3 p.m. Tuesday.
A Bloomington police investigation determined Webb had been driving north on Walnut Street in a blue Mazda car when he encountered demonstrators crossing the street in front of his car.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Webb rolled down his car windows and called a woman protester over to his car. The two had a verbal exchange. It appeared as though Webb attempted to strike the woman, but he did not.
That is when Jeremiah Adams ran to Webb's driver's side window in an attempt to defend the woman. According to police Webb then reportedly hit Adams in the face. He then grabbed Adams by his clothes and kept a hold of him while Webb proceeded to drive northbound on Walnut Street.
Adams was dragged by the car and later fell to the ground, causing cuts to his hand. The car then sped east on First Street from Walnut Street.
