AT&T Expands Mobile Internet Coverage In Washington County

Last updated on Thursday, February 7, 2013

(NEW PEKIN) - As part of its continuing network investment to support growing demand for advanced mobile devices and applications, AT&T announced the activation of a new mobile Internet cell site in Washington County that will enhance coverage for area residents, businesses and travelers.

The cell site is located near State Road 60 and Sullivan Lane in the town of New Pekin. With mobile Internet speeds, AT&T customers can surf the Web, download files faster, and enjoy the very latest interactive mobile applications.

"The way we communicate has changed as Hoosier families and businesses rely more and more on their wireless devices to stay connected," said State Senator Richard Young. "This kind of investment in new technology in rural Indiana is great news as we look to compete in a global economy."

The new cell site is one part of AT&T's ongoing efforts to deliver the best possible mobile Internet experience for customers. AT&T invested $365 million in its wireless and wired networks in Indiana through the first half of 2012.

"Because of the leadership of Sen. Young and his colleagues in the General Assembly, Indiana has one of the best business climates in America for telecommunications investment," said AT&T Indiana President George S. Fleetwood. "We're committed to investing heavily in the networks of the future across our state as we enhance our customer experience and keep Hoosiers connected."

AT&T's mobile Internet network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most widely used wireless network platforms in the world.

AT&T operates the nation's largest Wi-Fi network** including more than 31,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots at popular restaurants, hotels, bookstores and retailers across the country. Most AT&T smartphone customers get access to our entire national Wi-Fi network at no additional cost, and Wi-Fi usage doesn't count against customers' monthly wireless data plans.
