Two New Troopers Report to Bloomington District

(BLOOMINGTON) - Two new Indiana State Police Troopers Randy Van Arsdale and Michael Tummers reported to the Bloomington District to begin their new careers as Indiana state troopers.

Troopers Van Arsdale and Tummers were among 48 graduates of the 72nd Indiana State Police Recruit Academy, which graduated December 21, 2012.

During the academy, recruits received approximately 930 hours of structured law enforcement training which included 80 hours of criminal law, 80 hours of vehicle operations training, and 47 hours of traffic law. They also developed skills in criminal investigation along with 47 hours of vehicle crash investigation and training related to impaired driver detection as well as numerous other law enforcement related subjects.

Trooper Van Arsdale

Trooper Van Arsdale, 36, is a native of Freedom, IN., and a 1994 graduate of White River Valley High School in Greene County. Van Arsdale attended Ivy Tech State College. Trooper Van Arsdale served as an Indiana State Police Motor Carrier Inspector before becoming the Gosport Town Marshal. Van Arsdale and his wife, reside in Owen County and have six children.

Trooper Michael Tummers, is a native of Mooresville, IN, and a 2002 graduate of Mooresville High School. He later attended Ivy Tech State College. Trooper Tummers served in the United States Army for five years before becoming an Indiana State Trooper. Tummers and his wife reside in Morgan County and have two children.

Both troopers have started their 14 weeks of field training with experienced troopers. The program allows them to put the skills and knowledge they gained in the academy to work in the field. Upon successful completion of the field training program, they will receive their own patrol car and begin solo patrol responsibilities.
