(BEDFORD) - A strong line of severe storms are likely to hit the area late tonight and early Wednesday.

And Valerie Luchauer, director of emergency management for Lawrence County, says she is passing out free weather radios made available by Indiana Home Land Security to low income families, those with disabilities and day care centers in Lawrence County.

The number of radios given to the county was determined by Lawrence County's population, Luchauer says.

Those wanting a weather radio are asked to call Luchauer or to stop by her office which will be open till 5 p.m. today.

According to the National Weather service a rapidly strengthening surface low will be move from the middle Mississippi River Valley to the Great Lakes by dawn on Wednesday.

A solid line of storms will develop ahead of a tailing cold front and will move into areas west of I-65 after midnight late Tuesday night, moving rapidly east to the I-75 corridor by around dawn on Wednesday. Very strong winds and somewhat unstable conditions near the surface will likely allow for some instances of damaging winds through Tuesday night. Isolated brief tornadoes will also be a threat with this line of strong storms.

Stay up to date of the latest forecasts as timing of this line of storms could vary slightly.

Since this line of storms is expected to move through the area during the overnight hours when many will be sleeping, Luchauer says it is a good idea to make sure to leave your weather radio set to alert mode or stay tuned to radio stations.

Outside of thunderstorms winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour with gusts between 35 to 40 miles per hour are possible from late this afternoon, lasting into the afternoon on Wednesday.

Stay tuned to WBIW 1340 and to NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio for the latest forecasts.
