Salem Man Arrested In Son's Death

Last updated on Wednesday, January 16, 2013

(SALEM) - A Salem man has been arrested on charges of reckless homicide in his son’s death last summer in a van crash.

19-year-old Elijah Isaacs of Salem surrendered Friday at the Washington County Sheriff's Department. He remained jailed today on a $10,000 bond.

According to police reports, Isaacs was driving too fast when his van went airborne and crashed, killing Isaacs' 2-year-old son Hayden Overton and seriously injuring another. Overton suffered severe head injuries in the rollover crash.

Isaacs' other small child, 23-month-old Elijah Isaacs Jr. was seated in the back seat, behind the front seat passenger. Overton was behind the driver, 19-year-old Elijah M. Isaacs Sr.

Also in the backseat, between the infant boys, were two teenagers. They are Isaacs Sr.'s sisters, according to police.

Investigators say Isaacs was going roughly 61 mph in a 45 mph zone, when the van crested a hill and went airborne about 70 feet.

Hayden's family says the crash was just a terrible accident.

But Washington County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Larry Motsinger says adults are supposed "to be responsible for the children they have with them."
