"Riding The Rails" Ends Two In Jail

Last updated on Saturday, January 5, 2013

(JASONVILLE) -Two men “riding the rails” wound up in the Greene County Jail last week where they’re both being held in lieu of a $1,000 bond.

Anna Rochelle, of the Greene County Daily World report, Donald Osborne, 49, of San Diego, Calif., and Joseph Andrew Bailey, 26, of Terre Haute, both faced a charge of criminal trespass, when they appear for an initial hearing in Greene Superior Court Friday morning.

Shortly before midnight on Dec. 27, the Indiana Railroad contacted Officer Ryan Van Horn of the Jasonville Police Department about two individuals that had climbed onto their train.

A railroad employee who was driving a different vehicle had witnessed the two on the train.
The officer was able to make contact with the engineer operating the train who said he was almost to Jasonville but did not want to continue into a switching yard with the two men on the train.

The officer told the engineer to stop the train between the Walnut St. and Park St. railroad crossings in Jasonville and he would make contact with the two.

Van Horn reported the train arrived, stopped and he located the two men in a freight car.
Railroad personnel advised the officer that the two men did not have permission to be on the train and the company wanted them prosecuted.

According to affidavits filed with the court, when both Osborne and Bailey were asked if they had permission to ride, they both said they did not.

Jasonville Police Officer Brian Pilant and Deputy Dustin Cain of the Greene County Sheriff's Department also responded to assist on the scene.

The two were booked into jail early Dec. 28.
