(BEDFORD) - Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley and mail carriers are asking citizens and business owners clear ice and snow from the sidewalks of the property to prevent accidents.
Parsley says the ice makes for treacherous walking conditions and in some cases, creates a situation where people are walking in the street, which can be just as dangerous.
Mitchell Postmaster Debra Godsey says customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside delivery should remove snow piles left by snow plows to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers.
Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes.
Godsey says The postal service curtails delivery only after careful consideration, and only as a last resort.
Parsley says the city has an ordinance that requires people to keep their sidewalks clear.
While the police department doesn't plan to write tickets, homeowners should try to clean the snow and ice from the sidewalks.
