Last updated on Tuesday, January 8, 2013

(ORANGE COUNTY) - Orange County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Bill Fullington reported, 2012 proved to be the most crash-filled year Orange County has ever experienced.

Deputies responded to 395 crashed. That number topped the previous high of 388 crashes in 2008, a 4.8 percent increase.

The busiest month for crashes was December with 45 crashes investigated. Fullington says deputies have seen a 38 percent increase in motor vehicle collisions.

Orange County Sheriff Richard Dixon says each year deputies are seeing an increase in traffic in Orange County and the construction taking place on roadways is a contributing factor to the increase in accidents.

He added motorist traveling narrow and unfamiliar county roads in an effort to avoid congested construction sites is another reason for the increase of accidents.
