(ORLEANS) - The American Radio Relay League's Indiana section has organized a meeting of Orange County Amateur Radio Emergency Services for Jan. 29.

It will begin at the Rural District 2 Fire Station, which is on Quarry Road in Orleans.

Larry Jones (WB9FHP), Orange County ARES assistant emergency coordinator, and Charlie Emerick (KC9VQD), the county's ARES assistant emergency coordinator, will direct the meeting.

They will discuss the organization of the local ARES group and provide training information concerning aspects of the ARES operations. They also will accept registrations for the local team. There is no charge for joining.

Although primarily targeted at Orange County amateur radio operators, "hams" from other nearby counties are invited to attend the meeting and take advantage of this training opportunity. Those planning to attend are asked to call Jones at 865-0156 or direct e-mail to him at wb9fhp@gmail.com.

Those interested in finding out more about the Indiana Section Amateur Radio Emergency Service can visit www.inarrl.org/inares_index.html. Information provided by the Orange County group reports the communications infrastructure in cities and towns all over the United States have become more varied and reliable with each new technological advance.

Once in a while when disasters, such as tornadoes or earthquakes, strike even the best systems over wide areas fail or become overloaded for a short period of time while communications and other infrastructure are being repaired. That's when amateur radio operators can step in and help.
