(OOLITIC) - The Oolitic Town Council has settled the law suit to determine who owns the property at the dead end of Walsh Avenue.
The lawsuit was pursued by the city who believed they owned the land, but Bob Szemsack believed he owned the land. During mediation it was agreed the city owns the property and the Szemsacks were granted access to their adjoining property.
In other business the council:
* Is looking for Oolitic families that are 55-years-old and older or those with disabilities who may be eligible to receive funds from the Southern Indiana Development Commission to do repairs on their homes.
Eight to 10 families will be chosen, though an application process. Each family will be awarded a little more than $19,000 to make needed repairs that the family would otherwise not be able to afford. The total grant awarded was for $173,500. Anyone wishing to apply can contact Town Hall before Feb. 15th. All information is kept confidential.
* Council President Delvin Nikirk will attend a meeting in Vincennes on Feb. 11 to address the Safe Route To Schools project.
* Town Marshal Jon Jefferies says the property at 1000 Walnut Street was cleaned up.
* The Oolitic Fire Department will hold a road block on March 2 to raise needed funds for the department.
* Approved Jefferies to increase his police force from two reserve officers to four.
* The council passed a resolution to allow Clerk-Treasurer Jim Staley to transfer appropriations to accounts with a negative balance so they are back to zero.
