(MITCHELL) - The White River Humane Society is getting a boost in funding from the city of Mitchell.
The Mitchell Board of Works and Public Safety were notified by Shelter Director Jamie Wires the city's annual contract with the humane society would increase from $4,000 to $8,000.
What the city pays the society annually to take all the cats and dogs picked up by the street department has not increased since 2005.
Mayor Gary Pruett told the board the partnership between the humane society and the city is necessary. He says he was impressed with how much work the humane society does on such a limited budget, and although he didn't like spending the money, he noted the service the society provides to the city is vital.
In September, the Lawrence County Council approved an increase in funding to the humane society as well. Its allocation was raised from $35,000 a year to $45,000.
The city of Bedford pays $25,000 annually. That did not increase for 2013.
