Mitchell Junior Senior High School Cafeteria To Be Renovated

Last updated on Monday, January 21, 2013

(MITCHELL) - During a special meeting Thursday at the Mitchell Junior Senior High School cafeteria Mitchell school board voted to expand the kitchen and cafeteria, allowing more room for students.

Mike Lewis of the Times-Mail reports that because of the size of the cafeteria, the school has had an open lunch campus allowing students to flock to area businesses for lunch. But school officials say that has caused discipline and attendance problems.

Superintendent Steve Phillips says if all goes as planned, the board could approve final renovation plans in February and put the project out for bids.

Construction could begin as early as March and be completed in October.

The board will get money for the project through a savings on bond expenses. Because interest rates are low, Mitchell refinanced some old bonds. Refinancing the 2005 bonds will generate up to $2 million in cash. The school's debt payment amounts would remain the same. But the length of the term would be extended by a couple of years - from 2025 to 2027.
