(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington has hired Jason Carnes to serve as the new assistant director of the Department of Economic and Sustainable Development. In this position, Carnes will focus on small business relations.

"Jason will parlay his well-honed constituent service skills and his passion for making a difference in people's lives into this critical business advocacy and liaison role," said Danise Alano-Martin, director of the Department of Economic and Sustainable Development.

Alano-Martin said Carnes will help the department expand its business outreach for retaining and developing existing Bloomington businesses. He also will serve as the liaison to the business community for all City departments, focusing on issue resolution as well as policy implementations and process innovations that promote a more efficient business environment.

"I feel as though my professional path has prepared me for this part of the role in particular," Carnes said. "That is, representing business constituent interests to the City while also representing the public interest to businesses."

Since September 2011, Carnes has been an administrator for the Monroe County Commissioners, managing projects and outreach to other County departments as well as to the city, state and federal governments. Prior to that he spent four years working for Congressman Baron Hill, first as a constituent case worker then as a field representative.

Carnes has a bachelor's degree in social work from Indiana University and has worked for several local nonprofits, including Area 10 Agency on Aging, Middle Way House and the Shalom Community Center.

Carnes replaces Adam Wason, who became the City of Bloomington's communications director in August 2012 after serving for five years as the assistant director for small business relations. Alano-Martin said 97 people applied for the position and more than a dozen were interviewed before Carnes was selected.

Carnes will officially start at his new post on Feb. 4.
