(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University star relief pitcher Jonny Hoffman has been charged with possession with intent to deliver over 10 pounds of marijuana.
Hoffman was also removed from the IU baseball team, with the stated reason being a "violation of team standards."
According to IU Police Chief Keith Cash large amounts of marijuana were being received through the U.S. mail, and IU police confiscated two packages totaling more than 20 pounds.
A separate drug investigation led police to Hoffman, who opened the first package for police Dec. 8 and admitted to engaging in the activity for more than two years. Law enforcement obtained a search warrant for the second package Dec. 18. Cash says, Hoffman was not arrested, but instead issued a summons on the charge because of his "level of cooperation" and ongoing interviews with police. He will have his initial hearing on January 16.
IU coach Tracy Smith refused further comment on the matter through an IU spokesman after Indiana put out a release on Hoffman's status Sunday.
Hoffman, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound right-hander from Oceanside, Calif., led Indiana in wins and earned run average last season despite pitching exclusively from the bullpen.
He was named first-team All-Big Ten as the conference's top relief pitcher, going 8-2 with a 2.27 earned run average and five saves. He struck out 35 batters and walked just 17, holding opponents to a .243 batting average.
He returned for his senior season and was expected to be one of the top pitchers in the conference again.
