(UNDATED) - The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a wind chill advisory effective through Wednesday morning.
The coldest period will be tomorrow morning between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. with temperatures hovering around zero with wind chill temperatures about 15 below zero.
After another single digit morning on Wednesday, temps will start to moderate and we can focus on the next weather system.
Accumulating snow is possible Thursday night into Friday morning. The arrival of an arctic air mass will bring the coldest temperatures in two years to Central Indiana.
Wind chills of 10 to 20 below zero are expected.
A wind chill advisory means that very cold air and strong winds will combine to generate low wind chills.
This will result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken. If you must venture outdoors, make sure you wear a hat and gloves.
Safety is an issue for many people, including the elderly, children, people who work outdoors and the homeless.
Doctors say it only takes 5 minutes for exposed skin to freeze in the type of cold that's predicted for Tuesday, and frostbite can cause permanent damage.
Hypothermia - where the body loses heat faster than it can be produced -- can be deadly, especially for the elderly.
"It's the folks at the extreme of age that really can't tell you what's going on and if they're outside for long periods of time, their body temperature can drop," said Dr. John Finnell, who works in the ER at Wishard Memorial Hospital.
That's a real threat for people with outdoor jobs and aren't prepared.
With the forecast for temperatures in the teens and single digits, a brief but powerful blast of cold air can make the hardest outdoor work dangerous.
Also, leaving a child or pet alone in a cold car can be disastrous. Last year, 31 children died nationwide from hypothermia because they were left alone in an unheated car.
