2012 Brings End Of Strike At Indiana Limestone And Tragedy Strikes At GM

Last updated on Tuesday, January 1, 2013

(BEDFORD) - In January 2012, Indiana Limestone Millworkers Local 8093 with the help of a federal mediator, were back on the job.

Tim Spreen, union president and Duffe Elkins, senior vice president of operations for Indiana Limestone says the agreement was a win-win situation for both sides.
Millworkers had been on strike since mid November 2011.

Wages were not an issue. Workers took to the picket line to object to proposed contract changes that would affect seniority rights, sick days, time off, tardy rules and pension plans.

Tragedy Strikes At GM

Tragedy struck at Bedford's GM Casting Plant when Brian Gilbert, of Oolitic, was fatally injured after being caught in the mechanism of a scissor lift at the plant in October.
He was flown to the University of Louisville Hospital where he was taken off life support on October 10.

He had worked at the plant for more than three decades and was a member of the United Auto Workers.

Another worker, Emerson "Preston" Hall, also was hurt. Authorities said his injuries were less serious.
