(BEDFORD) - Bedford Police Officers Greg Hagan and Sgt. Terry Moore were honored for their heroic efforts during Tuesday’s Board of Works meeting.
According to Chief Dennis Parsley, on January 5th, the two officers responded to a home after a distraught woman reported her husband was going to commit suicide.
When the officers went to the home, the man had barricaded himself inside and refused to cooperate with officers.
Hagan and Moore attempted to talk the man out of harming himself, but those attempts failed.
"When they heard him kick the chair out from under him, both officers forcibly entered the home," Parsley says. "The officers lifted the man up and were able to free him - saving his life."
The man was taken to the hospital to receive physical and emotional care.
In other business the board:
* Approved the ARA contact agreement for administration assistance of the storm water project. The grant will allow the city to repair storm water problems at the U Street channel, Eastern and Western Avenue and on Lincoln Avenue.
Board President Byron Buker says he is glad the issues are being taken care of.
"I use to live on Western Avenue and know what they are dealing with," Buker says. "When I lived there I had 4 and a half inches in the basement of my home."
* Approved an ARA contract agreement for administration assistance of clearance project. This grant will allow the city to demolish the old water plant on M Street.
Utility Director Misty Adams says the plant has been out of service since 2000 and because of new regulations and its condition cannot be used as a water plant.
* Approved Smith Neubeker & Associates contract agreement for the proposals for storm sewer project. This firm will work on doing the surveying for the improvements on Eastern and Western Avenue, Lincoln Avenue and on U Street.
* Approved the request for a curb cut at 1420 N Street. The family is planning on putting in a driveway.
* Approved the Bledsoe Riggert Guerrettaz contract for the John Williams Boulevard sidewalk project. The firm will do a feasibility study and survey work so a sidewalk can be built on the north side of John Williams Boulevard.
The sidewalk would run from Becky Skillman Way to R Street.
Plan Director Dan Kirk says he is looking at doing the project in three phases, depending on available funding and the results of the feasibility study.
* Approved a change order amending the contract for renovations at the Bedford Transit Facility.
While remodeling the building, contractors found the roofing deck and purlins had rotted and trusses anchors needed replace.
