Former IU Basketball Player Opens Fire On Indianapolis Home

Last updated on Saturday, January 26, 2013

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A former Indiana University basketball starter is accused of opening fire on a home with his brother and 1-year-old nephew inside.

Jack Rinehart of TheIndyChannel.com reports that 26-year-old Devan Dumes appeared in court Friday on a felony charge of criminal recklessness and carrying a handgun without a license.

The incident happened Jan. 9 at outside a home in the 6600 block of Hazelhatch Drive, where Dumes' brother was visiting the mother of his child.

The woman told police Dumes showed up and asked for the keys to a recording studio belonging to his brother.

The two men began to argue, and the woman told police Dumes didn't seem right, with droopy eyes and slurred speech.

Dumes cursed as his brother, who was holding his 1-year-old son at the time, and was told to leave the home, according to the probable cause affidavit.

With the woman standing outside of the home, Dumes pulled a handgun from his waistband and opened fire, according to the affidavit.

The woman told police she dove to the ground to avoid being shot.

"(She) said she could not believe Devan was shooting into the house where he knew his brother and nephew were," according to the affidavit.

The woman said Dumes continued to fire at the house until the gun was empty before jumping in his Range Rover and driving off.

His brother got in another vehicle and followed after him, according to the affidavit.
When police arrived, they reported several bullet holes in the house and in a vehicle parked in the driveway.

Dumes was eventually arrested in connection with the shooting. His trial is set for March 27.
He is also facing charges of battery and domestic battery in connection with a May 2012 incident in which he's accused of beating his ex-girlfriend when she came to pick up her things from his apartment.

Dumes was a basketball star at Decatur Central High School before playing at IU through 2010.
