DXM - Psychoactive Drug, Being Used By Dubois County Children

Last updated on Thursday, January 10, 2013

(DUBOIS COUNTY) - The Dubois County Substance Abuse Council presented a new yearly comprehensive community plan to the Dubois County Commissioners.

Coordinator Janet Schnell says many of the same substance abuse problems still exist in the community as well as some new issues.

One new one is the psychoactive drug in cough medicine, Dex-Tro-methor-phan or DXM is a common active ingredient found in many over-the-counter cough suppressant cold medicines.

There is currently no age limit in Indiana to purchase this drug. Schnell says teens and young adults are using the drug, by drinking large amounts for its dissociative effects.

Schnell says another growing substance problem is the issue of the rolling meth lab.

Also, Schnell says the Greater Jasper School District will soon join all of the other county school corporations in random drug testing for students.
