(BROWNSTOWN) - Residents of the Town of Brownstown will soon be able to pay their sewer bills with debit and cards after members of town council approved to purchase new billing software for Clerk-Treasurer David Willey.
Eric DiBlasi of The Banner reports that the software will cost $9,380 and will be purchased from CompuTrain Services of South Bend.
Currently Willey uses a DOS-based program that he has told council is becoming more and more obsolete.
According to Willey, the new software, which will run on the office's current computers, will be comprised of three separate modules. They include: utility billing to support sewer rates, data upload and usage computation for monthly billing, tracking and storing customer information, service rods, and will offer multiple payment options for customers; general ledger to drive the accounts payable module and payroll with direct deposit options module.
In addition to ease of use, the software will provide the town with computation of Federal, State, Social Security, and Medcare tax during payroll and move to proper ledger accounts, which is now manually calculated and entered by Willey.
In addition to simplifying Willey's workflow, it will also bring the town up to date as far as how billing and payroll are processed.
While credit and debit card payments are big step toward the 21st century, online bill pay won't be available in the immediate future. Willey says Brownstown will need a website before they can do that.
