Last updated on Friday, January 4, 2013

(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington Black History Month Committee invites students in grades 4 through 12 who live or attend school in Bloomington to submit essays for the 2013 Black History Month Essay Contest.

This year's theme is "Lessons in Leadership." Students can select from a list of 11 possible subjects found at www.bloomington.in.gov/bhm. Successful essays will be 500 to 600 words long and will describe significant aspects of the subject's life story and how he or she has demonstrated leadership and contributed to society. Essays will be evaluated on content, grammar, attention to detail and how well the student relates to the subject's life.

First, second and third place prizes will be awarded in each of three categories: elementary (grades 4 through 6); middle (grades 7 and 8) and high school (grades 9 through 12). Prizes will be awarded on Feb. 21 at a reception honoring all essay contest participants.

The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. Jan. 31. Essays can be submitted electronically to bhmessaycontest@bloomington.in.gov or mailed to Black History Month Essay Contest, Safe and Civil City Program, PO Box 100, Bloomington IN 47402. Entrants must include their name, grade, email address, telephone number and the name of their school on their submission.
