Annual Soil And Water Conservation Meeting Feb 11

Last updated on Monday, January 7, 2013

(MITCHELL) - The annual meeting of the Lawrence County Solid and Water Conservation District will be at Spring Mill State Park at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 11.

This year's guest speaker will be Hans Kok, coordinator of the Indiana Cropping Systems Initiative. A native of Holland, Kok will talk about European farming practices and the evolution of farming in the United States.

Much of the talk will feature the practice of no-till farming which means planting crops with much less preparation of the soil such as discing or plowing.

In addition to benefiting the farmer, the practice is good for the environment. These practices will relegate large tillage implements to antique status alongside the Model T, according to the press release.

It reduces soil, fertilizer and herbicide run-off into streams and rivers, and fuel usage when planting. Reduced air and water pollution are the result and that benefits everyone.

Tickets cost $10 per person and can be purchased at the SWCD office, 1919 Steven Ave.
