American Red Cross Struggles With Attracting Donors

Last updated on Tuesday, January 15, 2013

(UNDATED) - The American Red Cross is stepping up efforts to attract blood donors in January.

The Red Cross made January National Blood Donor Month to encourage healthy donors to help the organization meet its 17,000 pints-per-day quota.

Katy Maloy, a Red Cross program Manager for the River Valley Blood Services for Kentucky, Southern Indiana and South-East Illinois says there is a nation-wide dip because of illness and weather.

Some donors are being turned away because of low iron levels in their blood. While low iron levels aren't necessarily related to seasonal sickness, they often drop when someone is on the verge of coming down with a cold or flu.

To donate blood, the Red Cross will be at the Bedford WalMart on Jan. 28th from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. to see other donation locations visit the Red Cross website at www.redcross.org
