(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County Clerk Myron Rainey says residents can now pay their court, probation and post bond using a debit or credit card.
"The system is up and running," Rainey says. "Fees from Circuit Court, probation and Superior Court I can be paid at the clerk's office in the courthouse. Those due in Superior Court II can be paid there."
Rainey says the service will allow those who don't have cash when the fees are due to charge them on a credit, thus keeping a warrant from being issued for their arrest.
"We will require them to present a valid ID when doing the transaction," Rainey says. "The name on the credit card must match that on the driver's license or we will not do the transaction. That way we will prevent anyone from using a stolen credit card or one that they have taken from a family member without permission."
If someone else wants to pay a person's fee, they can but they must be present and have identification.
Rainey added residents will not be able to use a credit card to make child support payments.
In other business:
*The commissioners were given an update from coroner-elect Robert Herr on the county morgue project. Herr says the drains have been placed in the floor and the frame work is almost complete. The refrigeration unit is in, but has not been assembled, Herr says.
Herr requested to purchase furniture for the office and reception area and other equipment now, instead of waiting to the first of the year. The commissioners granted the request.
*The commissioners signed the contract with Karr, an Iowa firm to clean and tuck point the courthouse.
*Kenneth Goben requested the commissioners vacate several roadways in Lawrenceport. The roads were plated but never developed and Goben has since bought the land where the roadways were to be developed. The commissioners couldn't vacate the property because county attorney Dave Smith says Goben had to follow state statue to have the roadways vacated. Goben will now file the proper forms and advertise the request and report back to the commissioners.
*Sheriff Sam Craig reported there were 129 inmates at the jail, of those 19 are female and 14 Department of Correction inmates. Craig also told the commissioner he is seeking bids on a baggage scanner for the courthouse annex. Craig says one company is willing to give the county a $4,000 discount if they purchase two. Each scanner is approximately $20,000.
*The commissioners signed a contract with Vectren to provide the county with natural gas at wholesale price, greatly reducing the county's gas bill.
*Project director Bob Dillon asked the commissioners to sign the final paperwork on the completion of the Williams covered bridge. Dillon told the commissioners crews have been working on the roadway to the bridge and creating a turn-around for vehicles.
*The commissioners appointed Tonya Chastain to the Tourism Board.
*The commissioners appointed Jim Oswalt and Rosemary Hunter to the Hoosier Upland board.
