Last updated on Thursday, December 6, 2012

(SHIELDSTOWN) - A 17-year-old Seymour girl was killed Wednesday when a car plummeted into White River in Jackson County.

According to Indiana Conservation Officer Jim Schreck, 18-year-old Tyler Ross, of Seymour, was arrested.

Ross was charged with reckless homicide, a Class C felony, and operating a motor vehicle without ever having received a license, a Class C misdemeanor. His bond has been set at $10,500 dollars.

The accident happened just after 5 p.m. on County Road 250 East, northeast of the Shieldstown Covered Bridge.

Schreck says details of the accident are still under investigation, but says the Mitsubishi left the roadway and landed inverted in the White River.

Ross and another 19-year-old man, escaped through the broken windows of the car and called 911.

An Indiana Conservation Officer diver, along with divers from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department and Indiana State Police arrived quickly to the scene. A wrecker was able to remove the vehicle from the water soon afterward.

However, Schreck says that the teen was found dead in the vehicle when the wrecker pulled the car from the water.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the teen's official cause of death.
