(UNDATED) - Snow is in the forecast for central Indiana Friday night and Saturday, with areas to the south expected to get higher accumulations.
That includes counties in the Indianapolis metro area.
A winter weather advisory is in effect from 7 pm Friday to 7 am Saturday for southern Indiana and north central Kentucky overnight Friday. This includes the following counties in Indiana:
Delaware, Randolph, Henry, Owen, Morgan, Johnson, Shelby, Rush, Sullivan, Greene, Monroe, Brown, Bartholomew, Decatur, Knox, Daviess, Martin, Lawrence, Jackson, Jennings, Wayne, Fayette, Union and Franklin.
The following counties are under a winter storm warning from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am: Orange, Washington, Scott, Jefferson, Dubois, Crawford, Perry, Harrison, Floyd and Clark.
A weak system will pass through Indiana, bringing up to two to four inches of new snow for Indianapolis and three inches or more for areas south of Columbus. Saturday, some lingering snow showers will be possible.
Accumulation will occur in the pre-dawn hours Saturday.
Sunday will be dry before another weak system moves in late Monday into early Tuesday bringing yet another shot at light snow. Temperatures will remain below average for the next seven days.
If you live in the area covered by the advisory or if you're traveling there, road conditions will be hazardous through Saturday evening. Use caution and plan extra time to reach your destination.
INDOT Preparations
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will fully staff all units in East Central Indiana ahead of snow expected to begin Friday evening.
INDOT's Indianapolis Subdistrict will have trucks and drivers covering all 68 routes by 7 p.m. INDOT's Tipton, Greenfield, Cambridge City and Albany Subdistricts will each deploy between 20 and 30 drivers to units within each subdistrict by 8 p.m. This shift of drivers will begin plowing and salting interstates, U.S. highways and state routes until 12 a.m.
At midnight, a second shift will replace all drivers. This midnight shift is expected to work until noon based on current weather forecasts. INDOT will continue to monitor forecasts and developing conditions and adjust plans and schedules if needed.
Meantime, a southwestern Indiana county is the only one in the state to remain under a travel warning, two days after Wednesday's storm. Gibson County's highway superintendent says he's hired six private contractors to help his department's 11 plow trucks clear 1,200 miles of roadway. The county plans to lift travel restrictions Saturday night.
