Seymour Schools Put On Lockdown After Threats

Last updated on Friday, December 21, 2012

(SEYMOUR) - Seymour Community Schools were placed on what was described as external lockdown Thursday because of at least three reports to police about people armed with weapons.

Reports of weapons at Emerson Elementary School and Seymour High School were reported. Seymour Police Chief Bill Abbott says all of the reports proved false.

"We had a report of someone on West Second Street reportedly armed with a rifle," Abbott said. "That proved to be a young man walking away from the school on Second Street carrying an umbrella."

Abbott said the police department receive calls from people reporting they've read about a shooting at the high school on social media. Abbott says there were not shooting anywhere in Seymour.

Abbott and Seymour High School Principal Greg Prange says the calls from citizens were a sign that people are nervous following the Dec. 14 massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman killed 20 young students and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Prange planned to send a letter home with students Thursday afternoon, explaining to parents what happened and what precautions were taken.

Prange says those precautions included an early lockdown of students in their classrooms and later allowing students to move between buildings but only with supervision of police officers,

"We want people to remain confident and have faith that their kids are safe," he added.
