(BEDFORD) - Blizzard conditions continue to pelt Lawrence County.
Valerie Luchauer, County Emergency Director, says travel is limited and there are no reports of power outages in the area.
Luchauer says the American Red Cross is prepared to open shelters if necessary and the county has four-wheel drive vehicles on standby if they are needed.
Near white-out conditions have been reported throughout the county.
"Snow removal crews are working as hard as they can," Luchauer says. "But it's difficult to keep pace with the falling and blowing snow. Until it stops, crews will not make a lot of headway."
Early this morning, precipitation began falling covering roads with a slush mixture of rain and sleet. But by 6 a.m., the winds picked up and huge snowflakes began falling.
Bedford city road crews were called out by police early this morning with county crews hitting the roadways around 6 a.m.
David Holmes Highway Superintendent says crews are doing what they can.
"We've got 13 trucks out there pushing snow off the roads," he added. "When it's snowing this hard, it doesn't take long for it to cover where we all ready have been."
