(SALEM) - An extremely intoxicated Ermela Daughtery, of Salem, was arrested last week after her BAC was found to be .30 - nearly four times Indiana’s legal limit.
Stephanie Taylor Ferriell of the Leader-Democrat reports that Daugherty caught the attention of two officers standing in the Salem Police Department parking lot at 11:40 p.m. Nov. 26.
Police saw Daughtery's white van come down the alley between the police department and Slimo's Saloon, turned east onto Poplar Street, then she failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of South High and Poplar streets.
Officer Chris Cauble followed the van, watching it cross the center line. The van stopped near the intersection of Old State Road 60 and Fair Street after Cauble activated emergency lights.
Daugherty failed field sobriety tests. She was unable to correctly take a field breath test and agreed to be taken to St. Vincent Salem Hospital for a blood test. Due to her high level of alcohol, Daugherty had to be checked in the emergency room.
Daughtery was uncooperative with the nurse and was arrested after an assessment by a doctor.
At the detention center, Daugherty became combative, throwing a mucus-covered paper towel at Cauble and the jail matron. She then threw money at the matron, then picked up her purse and slung it at the two, striking them.
Daugherty faces a felony charge of battery to a police officer and misdemeanor charges of OWI with a BAC of .15 or more and OWI. She has posted bond and been released.
