(BEDFORD) - A 16-year-old appeared in Washington Circuit Court on Friday to face multiple charges following an incident Thursday that involved law enforcement officers from three different departments: The Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Salem Police Department and Indiana State Police.
According to Deputy Jimmy Strange, he and Deputy Scott Schocke were sent to the Canton area at about 2:56 p.m. Thursday to investigate a report of two juveniles fighting.
Strange says they were told one of the teens fled the home armed with knives.
Deputy Schocke found the boy near the Old State Road 56 and Coombs Road, standing on a bridge railing. Strange say the youth had two large hunting knives and made threats at the officers, indicating he would not be taken alive.
Then the teen fled from the officers. The teen would not comply with police to stop and drop the knives and ran through a field, with the two officers following. The boy went into the woods, crossed a creek and ran up a hill.
That is when Sheriff Claude Combs, Detective Brent Miller and Trooper Scott Stewart approached from the other side and were able to apprehend the youth at the top of the hill, after a short struggle.
After his arrest the boy continued to struggle with police.
The boy is facing charges of refusing to put down a weapon, intimidation, criminal recklessness with a weapon, fleeing law enforcement, battery and battery on a law enforcement office with bodily waste which stems from him spitting on an officer.
The teen was taken to the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center.
