Mitchell Librarian Retires

Last updated on Tuesday, December 11, 2012

(MITCHELL) - Mitchell Community Public Library adult services librarian Starr DeJesus will join her husband Pedro in retirement on December 21st.

That is when DeJesus will work her final day at the library.

After that, when the DeJesus vehicle leaves the driveway bound for Westport, Kentucky or Troy, Ohio, Starr will join Pedro in getting some coveted time with grandchildren.

DeJesus has been a librarian at Mitchell for 17 years.

During her time in the library, DeJesus has seen four circulation systems, evolving from manual book checkout and card catalogs housed in tiny wooden drawers to computerized systems for virtually every library function.

DeJesus also has watched library patrons adapt to the times and the innovations. She has found that the degree to which people have adapted has been influenced "by age and by how motivated they are."

The job of an adult services librarian has involved much more than helping library visitors find books and authors. DeJesus has organized various educational sessions at the library, with themes ranging from home health care to geocaching. She also leads a book discussion group at Mitchell Manor.

Spending more time with grandchildren is only one of the interests DeJesus has on her list for retirement. She also hopes to spend more time with her mother. In addition, she has plans to travel, with stops to include a first-time visit to her husband's homeland, Puerto Rico.
