(MITCHELL) - The Mitchell Community Public Library has received a grant from Duke Energy.
The grant will be used to create mobile STEM (Science, Technology , Engineering, and Math) stations for children.
"We want to take advantage of all the unused time kids have - they spend a lot of time in waiting rooms and offices with little to stimulate their minds," said Jacqui Milliern, youth services librarian. "These mobile STEM stations will let pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade children engage with hands-on mini-experiments in science, technology, engineering and math."
The Mitchell library is partnering with the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane STEM Program to design the mobile station activities and to maintain the stations in the long term.
Anticipated experiments include viewing objects through a child-friendly microscope, creating simple electric circuits and building basic machines with Lego Robotics.
Children who begin an experiment at a mobile STEM station can carry on their learning at home by taking one of the stations' leveled learning extension worksheets. Completed sheets can be redeemed for a small prize at the library.
