(SEYMOUR) - A police pursuit of a vehicle that began in Jackson County and spilled over into Jennings County claimed a man's life on Sunday.

Major Jerry Shepard, with the Jennings County Sheriff's Office, says deputies were sent to US 50 west of North Vernon on a report that the Seymour Police Department was in pursuit of a red Jeep Cherokee.

The Jeep has fled from police in Seymour as an officer attempted to make a traffic stop. Shepard says the fleeing vehicle traveled eastbound on US 50 from Seymour and turned north on County Road 750 West near Hayden.

It crashed into an embankment at the intersection of County Road 750 West at County Road 100 North in Spencer Township.

After the crash, the driver fled on foot and attempted to elude police by trying to swim across a pond and that is when he disappeared under the cold water and didn't resurface.

A member of the Indiana State Police Dive Team lived nearby and arrived at the scene. The diver found the man in 10 feet of water and pulled him from the pond.

Officers immediately began CPR. He was transferred to an ambulance and taken to Schneck Medical where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room. Shepard says the man's name is not being released at this time.
