(BLOOMFIELD) - Paul Matthew Turpin, 37, of Linton, was arrested last week in the Greene County Courthouse on a warrant issued on a preliminary charge of possession of a regulated explosive by a convicted felon, a class C felony.
The Greene County Daily World reports that Turpin was at the Greene County Courthouse for a hearing in another case, but there was a warrant out for his arrest and before the hearing began, Turpin was taken into custody. He was transported to the Greene County Jail where he's being held on a high bond - $250,000 surety or cash in full, with no ten percent allowed.
When Turpin was first arrested, his bond was initially set at $10,000 according to the standard bond schedule. Then the Greene County Prosecutor's Office filed a motion requesting the court raise the amount of his bond to the higher amount and the motion was granted in Greene Superior Court.
According to a court document, Turpin has a criminal history that includes a prior class B felony conviction in 2002 for dealing in a Schedule II controlled substance, a class B felony conviction in 2006 for dealing in a Schedule II controlled substance, and a class B felony conviction in 2005 for dealing in methamphetamine, among others.
Turpin is also facing charges in a recent case involving operating a vehicle while intoxicated and that's what he was going to court for on Wednesday - that hearing's now been continued to a later date.
Turpin has been under an ongoing investigation, suspected of having at least one explosive device that under Indiana law is illegal for a convicted felon to possess.
Law enforcement officials did not want to comment on the case until the investigation is complete but more information is expected to be released at a later date.
The Linton Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from the ISP Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team.
