(UNDATED) - The new stretch of I-69 is attracting a lot of traffic, and that’s adding to the list of car versus deer crashes.
November 2nd, when the new I-69 extension opened, through December 14th, there have been 28 crashes, 24 of those are deer related.
Captain Dave Bursten with the Indiana State Police thought the numbers were interesting, but he says given the fact that it was the end of the rutting season, in southern Indiana, he can see how 86-percent of the crashes would involve deer.
Bursten says drivers need to be careful about deer and all the other hazards that Indiana roads can offer.
He also says if you can't slow down in time to avoid a crash with an animal, don't leave your lane.
Bursten says it is better to hit the animal than to swerve off the road and hit a tree, or veer into oncoming traffic and hit a car.
