(SALEM) - 31-year-old Cory McClaughlin, of Fredericksburg, a registered sex offender who failed to update his registry information is facing a Class D felony as the result of that inaction.

Stephanie Taylor Ferriell, of the Leader-Democrat reports, McClaughlin, was arrested on a warrant last week.

In late August, officers went to his residence to verify his address and employment.

Another person at the home told police he was at work. When officers asked if he was at Saroyan Hardwoods (the business was destroyed in the March 2 tornado), she said he had been laid off March 22.

McGlaughlin failed to update his profile with new employment information, as is required by law.

McGlaughlin has convictions dating to 2004 for sexual misconduct with a minor and sexual battery. His registration is lifetime.

Prosecutor Dustin Houchin said he works closely with local law enforcement agencies to ensure sex offenders register as required and that the information they provide is accurate.

Houchin urges residents to be aware and inform themselves. Sex offender registries are available to the public 24 hours a day at both the city police department and sheriff's department.

Online access is through www.indianasheriffs.org and citizens can sign up for text or email alerts for notification when a registered sex offender moves near them.

"Pay attention to what's around you," Houchin said. "You can check the registry and get helpful information, but the most important thing is to be a watchful parent. I want to remind parents that most abuse occurs from family members.

"While you need to pay attention to the neighborhood, you also need to pay attention to the people you associate with in your own home."
