(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington’s Department of Parks and Recreation and Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD) have announced that seven community projects will each receive subsidized use of the Buskirk-Chumley Theater for one day during 2013 via the Buskirk-Chumley Theater Grant Program.
Seventeen projects were submitted for consideration.
The following is a list of recipients and a brief description of each project:
• Center for Sustainable Living, "Trashion Refashion Show": This event brings together artists, designers and models of all ages and from all walks of life to raise awareness about creating wearable art from discarded clothing, recyclables and non-recyclables.
• Lotus Education and Arts Foundation, "Lotus at 20" concert series: This three-part concert series celebrates Lotus' 20th year of presenting music and arts experiences that showcase world diversity.
• Limestone Comedy Festival, "Limestone Comedy Festival": This three-day event to be held in summer 2013 will present local and regional comedians and performers to promote Bloomington as a destination for unique comedy experiences.
• Silk Road Institute, "21st Annual Silk Road Bayram Festival": This festival will feature the Silk Road Ensemble, which includes local, national, and international musicians and dancers from regions traditionally associated with the Silk Road.
• City of Bloomington and Monroe County ACHIEVE and The Active Living Coalition, "The Weight Of The Nation - Confronting America's Obesity Epidemic": This is a four-part documentary series developed by HBO.
• WFHB, "Jim Hightower: Celebrating 20 Years of WFHB": This program will feature a question and answer session with legendary commentator Jim Hightower.
• City of Bloomington Volunteer Network, "Be More Awards": These awards will recognize exceptional volunteers during a community-wide celebration of volunteerism.
This project is another effort under the City's strategy to leverage and expand the economic development potential of the arts in Bloomington. According to the 2012 Americans for the Arts study, Bloomington's nonprofit arts sector contributes $72.3 million to the local economy annually through direct spending by arts organizations and their audiences.
