BUEA To Sell Recycling Depot Solid Waste Management District

Last updated on Monday, December 10, 2012

(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Urban Enterprise Association and the Lawrence County Solid Waste Management District are close to an agreement.

The latest move came Thursday, when the BUEA board unanimously agreed to accept the district's offer to buy the Recycling Depot on J Street for $60,000.

Closing costs, title insurance and other expenses would be paid by the district.

BUEA had sought $75,000 for the property, which it currently leases to the district.

Gene McCracken, president of the district's board, says the district has another option for a recycling center, but wants to see it stay on J Street. He also says the district plans to improve the structure, which needs repairs to the eaves and other areas.

Board members Lee Cuba and Dan Kirk says selling the property, even at a loss, would mean an improvement in the area, given that the district plans to repair the building.

They also added BUEA should never have been in the business of owning property, saying the association's goal is to create and spur economic growth and improve the quality of life in certain areas of the city.

McCracken will now report back to the solid waste district and if they accept, the deal will be completed after the first of the year.
