(WASHINGTON) - Bryan Sergesketter has been named code enforcement officer for the City of Washington.

Mayor Joe Wellman announced the news on Friday, adding the position is a new one approved by the city council earlier this year.

Sergesketter will be responsible for enforcing various ordinances related to such issues as trash, weeds, noise and abandoned vehicles. He is also charged with reviewing all such ordinances for needed updates, since many of the city's ordinances were enacted many years ago.

Previously, the enforcement, tracking and follow-up on many of these ordinances fell upon the building commissioner.

Wellman says Bryan will work with other departments - police, fire, animal control, utilities - to enforce and implement.

Wellman says the new position is a result of comments received from constituents about the need to step up efforts at enforcing city ordinances, particularly the ones I like to call 'quality of life' issues.'

The code enforcement officer will be housed in the building commissioner's office, and the two positions will work closely together. Sergesketter's appointment follows the appointment last month of Terry Wininger as building commissioner. Sergesketter's enforcement of "quality of life" ordinances will allow Wininger to focus more on building standards, permitting and zoning.

Sergesketter previously was an employee of Toyota in Princeton. He owns his own landscaping maintenance business and has been a resident of Washington for many years. His wife Maria grew up in Washington and they live in the city with their four children.
