Brownstown Students Collect Blankets

Last updated on Friday, December 21, 2012

(BROWNSTOWN) - Members of Brownstown Central High School’s Distributive Education Clubs of America, a club that focuses on business and marketing, spent the month of December collecting blankets for Jackson County Sertoma Club’s efforts to provide families in need this Christmas.

The Jackson County Banner reports blankets were collected by juniors and seniors through a volunteering project organized by members of Jackson County Americorps.

Linnie Wilcox, service learning coordinator responsibility is to help students learn about volunteering and what effect is has on the community.

The collection has become a competition between Brownstown Central High School and Seymour High School to see who can collect more blankets.

The schools only compete for bragging rights, but classrooms at BCHS have an interest in collecting the most blankets and coming up with the most creative collection bin design.

The class that collects the most blankets will receive a pizza party. The most creative design for a collection bin gets doughnuts.

There is still time to donate, the blankets will be delivered by members of Jackson County Sertoma Club on Christmas Eve.

Winters said the blankets collected by the schools give them enough to give one or sometimes two blankets per family.

Jackson County Americorps is also working to make more volunteer opportunities available to students. The goal is to offer an event or program each months for students to be a part of.

Willcox said the organization also wants to empower students to be the primary role in helping the community.

Families this winter will be warmer because of the efforts of students who have helped make a difference. 141 were collected at BCHS without tallying the number from this week.
