BNL Educators Consider Changes To School Calendar

Last updated on Tuesday, December 18, 2012

(BEDFORD) - Local educators are considering major changes to the Bedford North Lawrence School calendar.

The idea is to help students retain more of what they learn so teachers and pupils can spend less time reviewing old lessons and more time tackling new ones.

Assistant superintendent Gary Conner has prepared three proposed calendars for the 2013-14 school year and presented them to school board members for their review.

He is also looking for input from school staff and parents. Under the traditional calendar students would start school Aug. 13.They would get a two-day fall break and the standard time off for Christmas vacation and spring break. The last student day would be May 29.

The intermediate proposal calls for students to report on Aug. 8. It would include a one-week break in October, the traditional Christmas time off and a one-week spring break. The last student day would be May 29.

The balanced calendar has students reporting to class on July 31. There would be a two-week break in October, a two-week vacation between semesters during the Christmas holiday and a two-week break in the spring. The last student day would be May 29.
