(BLOOMINGTON) - The college homes of Indiana University students away from the campus for the holidays present inviting burglary targets, so authorities are urging them to take steps to protect their possessions.

Bloomington Police Department Capt. Joe Qualters says burglary and theft reports surge when students return after holiday and find their off-campus residences and larger apartment complexes had been burglarized.

Police also advise students to take pictures of their items and write down serial numbers.
